Urinary incontinence is the involuntary leakage of urine
Meaning a person urinates when they do not intend to. This condition occurs when control over the urinary sphincter is either lost or weakened. Various factors can contribute to urinary incontinence, including stress factors like coughing, physical exertion, and sneezing. It is common during and after pregnancy due to the added pressure on the bladder and hormonal changes.
Additionally, conditions such as obesity increase the risk of urinary incontinence by putting extra pressure on the bladder. The likelihood of experiencing urinary incontinence also increases with age, as the muscles that support the bladder and urethra can weaken over time. Both men and women can suffer from this condition, though it is more prevalent in women due to pregnancy, childbirth, and menopause.
